Long popular in France, micellar water is now picking up in everyone's skincare cabinet. It looks like water, but don’t let the word water fool you as it may look like water but its viscosity and texture is nothing like it. The product is known for its ability to cleanse, and tone skin gently and at the same time keep it hydrated.

Micellar water is purified water, combined with tiny lipid molecules of hydrating ingredients such as glycerin and mild surfactants, for cleansing. Surfactant is a short term for SUrface ACtive agent, which removes grease and emulsify oils, to be washed off easily. Micellar water is made up of micelles - tiny molecules suspended in soft water. These micelles act like a magnet to draw out dirt, impurities and oil and thus effectively makeup, sunscreen, and impurities from the skin. Although Micellar water is mild in nature, it may not work well to remove a full face of heavy makeup or deep clean the skin.

What is micellar water good for?

Micellar water is suitable for all skin types, however, it is a good choice, especially for those with sensitive skin. Of course, there are many people out there who swear by it as their sole cleanser. But if you wear very heavy makeup, double cleaning would still be a better option to go for.

Can I use micellar water even without makeup?

Micellar water contains surfactants milder than regular cleansers, so it cleanses without stripping off your skin of its natural oils. The formula is so light and gentle that there's no need to rinse it off. But at the same time, it may not be able to remove heavy makeup and dirt, so it is a good idea to go with an oil cleanser first. If you don't wear very heavy makeup, you can consider using micellar water.

How to use Micellar Water?

Use a cotton ball soaked with the cleanser and wipe it along your face. The micelles will pull the dirt, makeup and sebum, off the skin. It is not necessary to rinse off with water unless you’re doing a double cleanse, but if you feel like washing off, then go ahead! Some people even use it as a pre-cleanse before using a water-based cleanser.
